Seniors Community Grant Program 2019-20 – Stream 2

Description

The Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility supports Ontario seniors in staying active and safe in their communities while preventing social isolation and elder abuse. The Seniors Community Grant Program encourages community involvement of seniors by supporting hundreds of projects focused on volunteerism, learning, financial awareness, social inclusion, elder abuse prevention, mental well-being and physical activity.

This year, the program has been improved to make it more efficient and to better support the needs of seniors in underserviced rural, remote and Francophone communities.

A total investment of $3 million in 2019-20 will allow non-profit community organizations and municipalities to receive funding ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 for local projects.

Funded projects will promote one or more of the following objectives:

    • Projects to help reduce social isolation. This would include opportunities for seniors to connect and stay in touch with their peers. For example, organizing local community events that encourage seniors to network and be active, organizing local tours or events that benefit seniors, or introducing seniors to volunteer opportunities in their community.

    • Initiatives to increase the safety and well-being of seniors, including combatting elder abuse. For example, providing financial education and power of attorney information sessions for seniors to guard against financial abuse.

    • Projects that help communities implement age-friendly initiatives to increase accessibility and seniors’ safety. For example, the development of ride-share programs in the community.

    • Initiatives that leverage the network of Seniors Active Living Centres (SALCs) and extend their reach to underserviced seniors. For example, providing programs to those in remote areas by using mobile road shows, and/ or setting up satellite office at SALC locations where seniors can access the same services as in larger communities.
